Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds was developed starting in 1993. Initially intended to feature pixelated graphics for MS-DOS, the studio changed direction after co-founder Ron Gilbert saw hand-drawn animation at a conference, leading to a complete restart with hand-drawn graphics. During development, the protagonist Freddi was changed from a boy to a girl at the insistence of game designer Tami Borowick, who wanted a playable female Junior Adventure heroine. The script had to be revised to replace male pronouns, and Borowick removed lines that implied weakness.
